Antonio Segui Biography
Antonio Seguí, born in 1934 in Cordoba, Argentina, is an internationally known artist. He studied painting from 1951 to 1961 in various countries, including his native Spain and France, and was an avid traveler. His first solo exhibition was held in 1957 in Cordoba, while in 1961 he represented Argentina at the Paris Biennial. Over the years, he was forced to move to different parts of the world due to the political situation in his homeland.
Seguí's career began with the influence of artists such as George Grosz and Otto Dix, characterized by an expressionist and ironic figuration. Later, his figuration evolved towards the absurd, the facetious and the humourous, creating a theatrical world in which a man in motion seeks his place in the world. In his work the character of Mr. Gustavo always emerges, a mysterious character in a jacket and trousers with a hat, who crosses his works as a sort of double of the artist. Seguí explores the human condition through expressionism, political and autobiographical satire and irony, maintaining an enigmatic aspect that challenges the viewer.
The artist uses different media, such as charcoal, pastel, pencil or pen, creating works that seem to come from the comics universe. Furthermore, he created an important production of engravings and drawings. In 2005 the National Museum of Modern Art organized a retrospective of his works on paper.
Seguí was an artist full of humour, irony and finesse. His work reflects the human condition, representing a world in which humor is the polite face of horror and where memories represent experience. Today, the artist lived and worked in Arcueil and passed away in Buenos Aires in February 2022.
