Lino Selvatico Biography

Selvatico Lino (Padua, 1872 - Treviso, 1924) Lino Selvatico was an artist active in the Venetian reality, during the birth of the Biennale. His father was one of the promoters of the event and the Selvatico living room was always frequented by the fin de siècle aristocracy, together with the literary, artistic and theatrical world. The painter initially attended the Faculty of Law, before dedicating himself entirely to painting. He participated in the first edition of the Biennale in 1899 and subsequently was present in almost all editions. Lino Selvatico became an important portraitist in Venice, renewing this genre thanks to the comparison with European taste and eighteenth-century English painting. His most famous works are the portraits, which he created for Venetian and Milanese high society, depicting an imagery linked to the Belle Epoque. Selvatico concentrated above all on the female figure and the portraits of the actress Irma Gramatica and Mrs. Coletti were important. In 1918 he moved to Milan, where he was able to broaden his clientele, also including the protagonists of the social and cultural life of the time. The Biennale dedicated two important individual exhibitions to him in 1912 and 1922 and a retrospective in 1925.
