Luigi Selvatico, born in Venice in 1873, was the son of the playwright and mayor Riccardo Selvatico. From childhood, his father introduced him to the world of art. On the other hand, his engineer uncle taught him scientific and mechanical study, which led him to design and patent parts for automobiles. However, he began to paint, focusing on the reproduction of mechanical elements. His debut in the Turin Triennale of 1896 was marked by these works. Later, he studied engraving with Cesare Laurenti, continuing to practice both this art and painting. Selvatico began to represent everyday life in a naturalistic way, but then introduced a new artistic trend to his work with the representation of the poor and decadent side of Venice. He used the camera to study his subjects, helping to create the suspended and melancholy atmosphere of his works. He died in Roncade in 1938 at the age of sixty-five.
