G. Sestieri Biography
Giancarlo Sestieri is a well-known scholar of modern art who graduated from the University of Rome under the guidance of Giulio Carlo Argan. His attention was focused on Baroque painting and drawing, particularly the Roman and Neapolitan schools. He has contributed to numerous specialized magazines including "Paragone", "Commentari", "Arte Illustrata", "Antologia di belle arti" and "Storia dell'Arte", as well as to the "Writings in honor of Federico Zeri", to the "Studi in memory of R. Causa", to the "Studies in honor of L. Grassi" and to the "Memories" of the latter. In 1981 he edited the catalog for the exhibition "Sebastiano Conca 1680-1764" and in the same year, together with R. Roli, he completed the volume "The Italian Drawings of the Eighteenth Century" (Roman and Neapolitan section).
In 1984, together with J. Stock, he curated the graphic section of the exhibition "Civiltà del Seicento a Napoli", organized by the superintendence of Naples and held in the Capodimonte Museum. In 1994, he published the three volumes of the "Repertory of Roman Painting of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries" (ed. Allemandi), an important work containing over 1200 illustrations.
In the same year, he wrote the monograph "Domenico Gargiulo known as Micco Spadaro", together with B. Daprà, and was the curator of the monographic exhibition "Micco Spadaro, Napoli ai tempi di Masaniello" (Electa Napoli catalog ed.) which was held at the prestigious Certosa di San Martino in 2002. He was also the curator of various illustrative catalogs of antiquarian exhibitions of paintings and drawings, including those of the Gallerie Apolloni, Gasparrini, L'Ampronti, as well as cards for other Italian exhibitions and foreign.
