Irmgard Sigg Biography

Irmgard Sigg (1934 - 2021) is a French sculptor born in 1934 in Germany (in North Rhine-Westphalia, then in the Free State of Prussia) and died in Paris in 2021. She lived and worked in Paris from 1955 until her death on May 19, 2021 at the age of 87. Her work as a sculptor has evolved considerably over the course of her practice, moving from the architectural volumes of her early years to organic figures, often half-animal demi-humans of the late 1980s. Her works have been exhibited in particular at the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture de Paris in 1967, at the Salon de Montrouge, at the Villeparisis Cultural Center as well as on numerous occasions in the Darthea Speyer gallery in Paris. He enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in 1962 in René Collamarini's studio. At the Galerie Charley Chevalier in 1973 he presented a series of figurative works in resin, the material with which he created his first creation in public space in 1977 for the École du Chemin Vert in Bobigny. Moving now to architectural structures with clean geometric lines, the artist develops a sculpture that takes the form of a tangle. Thus began a period in which the artist created numerous constructivist-inspired works and installations of often monumental proportions. Little by little the forms are refined and leave the sometimes chaotic world of construction. "Insectoid" forms are intended as a transitional phase before the arrival of the animal and human silhouettes that make up the last part of his sculptural work. Irmgard Sigg definitively abandoned sculpture at the beginning of the 2000s and transposed this universe into colorful paintings, often taking the domestic universe as a frame. His most recent pictorial work evokes a mineral universe close to abstraction, and from this aesthetic of ruins a discreet and delicate way of recalling a childhood in Germany marked by the disasters of the Second World War seems to emerge.
