Giovanni Silvagni, born in Rome on 1 June 1790, studied at the Accademia di San Luca under the guidance of the neoclassical painters Gaspare Landi and Vincenzo Camuccini. His artistic choice focuses on the historical genre, considered the highest in painting. At the request of Pope Gregory XVI, Silvagni made a copy of Domenichino's “Flagellation of Saint Andrew”, which is currently located in the Lateran Museum. In 1831, he was made a knight of the Order of the Golden Spur. Silvagni published several works in the field of anatomy, including the Letter on the proportions of the human body, disclosed for educational purposes, in which he argued that the variety of forms prevents the establishment of rules, thus making Leonardo da Vinci's theories contradictory , Albrecht Dürer and Nicolas Poussin. Giovanni Silvagni died on 19 August 1853.
