Francesco Speranza Biography
Francesco Speranza, born in Bitonto in 1902, began his artistic journey by studying at the Liceo Artistico in Naples under the teaching of Vincenzo Migliaro. In 1924, Speranza moved to Milan where he enrolled at the Brera Academy, following Ambrogio Alciati's painting courses and obtaining his diploma with top marks.
His artistic career began with his participation in the permanent exhibition in Milan in 1926. Speranza participated in the Venice Biennials in 1936, 1938 and 1948, as well as all the Rome Quadrennials and many other regional, national and international exhibitions.
Speranza expressed his preference for tempera, used in an elaborate and ancient way, giving his work the body and brilliance of oil. His paintings present soft and warm tones, often embellished with glazes that derive from the fusion of southern color with the Lombard atmosphere.
It is difficult to identify in his works the trace of his complex and personal technical procedure, as well as of the preparatory work through notes, graphs and writings, which precede each creation. However, any reference to the materiality of the medium disappears in the face of the enchantment of the evocative magic of the paintings, with their volumes expertly punctuated in the blue of the sky, almost like a serene and luminous poem, capable of apparently simple happiness.
