Giovanni Stradano Biography

Jan van der Straet, also known as Giovanni Stradano, Johannes Stradanus or Sradan, was a Flemish painter born in Bruges in 1523 and died in Florence on 2 November 1605. He is also known for his engravings and the carpet cartoons he made accomplished.
Jan van der Straet learned the trade from his father and after his death he continued learning in the workshop of Maximilian Frank (from 1535 to 1537) and then in that of Pieter Aertsen in Antwerp (from 1537 to 1540). In 1545 he was admitted as a master in the Antwerp painters' guild. He undertook a journey through Europe: to France, to Italy where he stayed in Venice before settling in Florence where he worked for Cosimo I de' Medici and collaborated with Giorgio Vasari for the decoration of the Studiolo of Francesco I de' Medici and of the Clement VII room in the Palazzo Vecchio. In 1565 he was part of the teams of painters and sculptors tasked, under the direction of Giorgio Vasari, with creating the enormous decoration planned for Joan of Austria's entry into Florence on the occasion of her wedding to Francesco I de' Medici.
He was influenced by mannerism, including Michelangelo, and contributed to the development of great history painting in the Italian manner. He painted many altars for Florentine churches. He was very active as an engraver and designer at the Medici carpet factory, for which he created more than 130 cartoons illustrating the techniques and history of fishing and hunting.
He also stayed in Rome from 1550 to 1553 and in Naples in 1576. After a stay in Antwerp in 1578, he devoted much of his activity to engraving.
His drawings were engraved by Cornelius Galle the Elder.
