Enrico Stropparo Biography

Enrico Stropparo has a long ceramic tradition that began in the workshops of great ceramists. In 1972 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in 1973 at the Milan Triennale. Over the years he consolidated his interests in the roughest materials (clays and refractories) mixed with oxides and worked with "inlay". In this difficult technical exercise the rational and aesthetic matrices are softened by the slight inflections of the material and by the subtle colors entrusted solely to the natural tones of the earth. The geometries of the works progressively adapt to a sort of modern reinterpretation of the historical characteristics of Venetian architecture. In 1989 he won the Faenza Prize at the Faenza International Art Ceramics Competition. Important artistic events in recent years such as: International Ceramic Art in Taiwan, Contemporary Italian Ceramics in Arita-Sigaraki-Tokyo and Symposium of Italian Ceramic Sculpture in Beijing (China).

He attended the State Art Institute of Nove. His first teachers were two of the most authoritative interpreters of the second generation of the new Vicenza ceramics: Alessio Tasca and Pompeo Pianezzola.
In 1969 he began attending Tasca's laboratory and in 1970 he enrolled in courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice where his teacher in the sculpture section was Alberto Viani.
The collaboration with Tasca leads him to experiments which he conducts, above all, on "cotto" from which he draws modular panels.
In 1972 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in 1973 at the Milan Triennale.
He began teaching in Nove, Venezia, Schio and, starting from 1974, at the ISA in Cittadella. He still retains this last position of Artistic Disciplines.
In 1975 he consolidated his interests in rougher materials (clays and refractories) mixed with oxides and worked with "inlay".
In this sort of exploration of the limits of ceramic technique, Stropparo acquired evident abilities which were recognized with a first prize at the Munich Germany Fair in 1982 and with a personal exhibition in Trieste.
In 1983 he obtained the First Prize at the Reggio Calabria Biennial and exhibited with Alessio Tasca. In the same year he was awarded the Competition Plaque at the 41st International Art Ceramics Competition, Faenza.
In 1984 he won the purchase prize at the 42nd International Art Ceramics Competition of Faenza - International Ceramics Museum of Faenza.
In the eighties he continued his exhibition activity and in 1987 he produced the first black plates.
In 1988 he won second prize at the 3rd National Ceramics Competition in Savona.
In 1989 he dedicated himself to the creation of unique pieces with a strong architectural character: Doors, Spheres, Altars.
In 1989 he won the Faenza Prize at the 46th International Art Ceramics Competition of Faenza - International Ceramics Museum of Faenza.
He took part in the ceramic events of Santo Stefano di Camastra, Gualdo Tadino, Savona, Castellamonte and was invited to “Terre Provocate” (Padua 1991 and Bologna 1992), to the International Exhibition of Ceramic Art in Taiwan (1992) and in the same year to the Contemporary Italian Ceramics Exhibition in Arita-Sigaraki Tokyo.
In 2006 at the Dieda Gallery in Bassano del Grappa, with the title “Superfluo”, he exhibited a series of works on the theme of the bowl.
