Lucio Susmel Biography

Lucio Susmel (1914 - 2006) Originally from Fiume, after the end of the Second World War Lucio Susmel was an exile in Florence, where, while dedicating himself to forestry studies, he frequented the most up-to-date circles of contemporary culture, particularly in the artistic field. Immediately after the end of the Second World War he dedicated his first studies to wood technology, a discipline of which he became a freelance teacher in 1951. He was a researcher at the Forestry Experimental Station and from 1955 he carried out "Forestry and Alpiculture" tasks at the newly established Faculty of Agriculture of Padua. In 1961 he became extraordinary professor of Ecology and General Forestry, and in this role he was called to Padua in the same year. In 1971 he transferred his chair to the discipline of Ecology, a discipline for which he had contributed to laying the foundations between 1952 and 1955 with an important series of research, mostly developed in the fir forests of Cadore and Comelico. In San Vito di Cadore he founded the CEMV (Centre of Mountain Economy of the Venetians). A self-taught painter, Susmel cultivates a passion for the history of art and for collecting images of works from the main European collections. His personal collection is in fact made up of a substantial number of positive prints of paintings from numerous museums. These are shots purchased from the main photographic studios active on the market between the thirties and forties of the twentieth century, among others in particular with Alinari, Brogi, Anderson prints.
