At fifteen he was in Parma, a pupil of Giacomo Giovannini and then moved to Bologna where, with the maestro Giuseppe Dal Sole, he studied the works of Correggio and Parmigianino. Attracted by mannerism he incorporates alchemical meanings into his works. In 1721, urged by Duke Francesco Farnese, he was in Rome. He moved his workshop to Piacenza after donating his paintings to the convent of the Capuchin friars of Borgo San Donnino. Some of his paintings are preserved in the oratory of San Giuseppe in Cortemaggiore. His major clients are Enrichetta d'Este and Countess Sanvitale. He died on 3 December 1737 in the village of Campremoldo Sopra, in the Piacenza area, in a mysterious way, perhaps the victim of murder or of his alchemical experiments.
