Giandomenico Tiepolo Biography

Tiepolo Giandomenico (Venice, 1727-1804) Giandomenico Tiepolo was an Italian painter of the 18th century. Son of Giambattista Tiepolo and brother of Lorenzo Tiepolo, he joined his father's workshop at 13 and a few years later he was commissioned by the parish priest of the Church of San Paolo to paint the "Stations of the Cross" in oratory of the same church. From 1750 to 1753 he dedicated himself to the decoration of the residence of Karl Philipp von Greiffenklau, prince bishop of the Holy Roman Empire. Returning to Venice he entered the workshop of Pietro Longhi and Francesco Guardi. Between 1754 and 1755 Tiepolo created "the Apotheosis of Saints Faustino, Giovita, Benedetto and Scolastica" for the church of Saints Faustino and Giovita in Brescia. In the same period he painted the decorative cycle of the Abbot's study in the monastery of Saints Faustino and Giovita. In 1757 he created the frescoes of Villa Valmarana “Ai Nani” in Vicenza, where he concentrated above all on the guesthouse, in which he deviated from his father's classical style to move closer to that more linked to the Enlightenment. In 1761 he frescoed the rooms of Villa Pisani in Stra and in 1772 he was appointed master of the Academy of Venice, the current Gallerie dell'Accademia, becoming its President. In 1791 he created the frescoes of the family villa in Zianigo, removed in 1906 and today preserved in the Ca' Rezzonico palace in Venice.
