Giovanni Tizzano Biography

Tizzano Giovanni (Naples, 1889-1975) Giovanni Tizzano was an Italian sculptor. He began his artistic career as a foundryman at the “Chiurazzi Artistic Foundry”. In the 1920s he created the sculptures “Cecatella” and “Aricciulella di Capri”. The artist also created works in wax, polychrome plaster and bronze. He participated in the XVI Venice Biennale in 1928, presenting the sculpture "Erminia or Testa di bimba", and in the following editions until 1952, almost always exhibiting female busts such as "The fur coat and Flower of Mary". In 1940 he exhibited at the Biennale with a solo show of 32 bronzes, in which the influence of Medardo Rosso was clearly felt. In 1929 he participated in the International Art Exhibition in Barcelona, in 1934 in the II International Colonial Art Exhibition, in 1939 in the III Quadrennial of Rome. In 1942 he had his first solo exhibition at the “Casa d'Artisti” in Milan and the second at the “Galleria Forti” in Naples. Tizzano also restored life-size nudes, sometimes inspired by the Herculaneum bronzes in the Museum of Naples. Much of his artistic production is preserved in the Capodimonte Museum, while several of his sculptures were donated to the Municipality of Naples and then transferred to Castel Sant'Elmo. Some of his works are found at the Michelangelo Museum and at the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome.
