Van Rijn Rembrandt was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. From a young age he demonstrated a great talent for painting which led him to open his own studio at the age of 18. His father sent him to Amsterdam to study with Pieter Lastman, a skilled Italian painter of historical scenes. Rembrandt made himself known as a portraitist, always aiming to find a detail that could reveal the personality of his clients. In this way, Rembrandt was one of the greatest portraitists of his time, known for his ability to capture the emotionality of his subjects. Rembrandt also became famous for his self-portraits made using two mirrors. Rembrandt's style soon took an innovative turn involving his personal use of light, choosing to leave large areas of his paintings in shadow and illuminate only precise points within the painting, drawing the viewer's eye to a focal point. In 1640, Rembrandt became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke, an important recognition that further increased his fame and fortune. Rembrandt's private life was characterized by controversy, from relationships with women to managing his personal finances. Ultimately, the great painter was forced to declare bankruptcy. Rembrandt died on 4 October 1669 in Amsterdam and, sadly, was buried in an unknown grave as he was now poor.
