Norman Wisdom, (4 February 1915 - 4 October 2010) was an English actor, comedian, musician and singer, famous for a series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966 which featured an unfortunate character called Norman Pitkin. In 1953, after the release of his first film in a leading role entitled “Trouble in Store”, he received the BAFTA Award for the category “Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles”.
Wisdom became a celebrity in countries as far apart as South America, Iran and many Eastern Bloc countries, particularly Albania, where his films were the only ones with Western actors permitted by dictator Enver Hoxha. Read the full biography

Norman Wisdom Biography

Norman Wisdom, (4 February 1915 - 4 October 2010) was an English actor, comedian, musician and singer, famous for a series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966 which featured an unfortunate character called Norman Pitkin. In 1953, after the release of his first film in a leading role entitled “Trouble in Store”, he received the BAFTA Award for the category “Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles”.
Wisdom became a celebrity in countries as far apart as South America, Iran and many Eastern Bloc countries, particularly Albania, where his films were the only ones with Western actors permitted by dictator Enver Hoxha. Charlie Chaplin once referred to Wisdom as his "favorite clown".
Wisdom subsequently built a career on Broadway in New York City and as a television actor, earning critical acclaim for his dramatic role as a cancer patient in the television play "Going Gently" in 1981. He also toured Australia and South Africa .
In 1995, Wisdom was awarded the Freedom of the City of London and Tirana. The same year, he was appointed OBE and five years later he was knighted.
