Angelo Zanelli Biography

Angelo Zanelli was born in San Felice del Benaco on 17 March 1879. Even as a child, he demonstrated a great propensity for artistic studies which led him to move to Brescia in 1894 to undertake a course of specialization. During this period, he had the opportunity to learn the art under the guidance of Pietro Faitini. In 1898, he won the competition for the Bozzoni legacy which allowed him to obtain a three-year scholarship to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1903, Zanelli won the National Artistic Pension and moved to Rome to attend the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1908 he won the competition for the frieze of the Altare della Patria, a marble work of great impact which occupied him for many years. After the First World War, Zanelli created monuments commemorating the fallen in Imola, Salò and Tolentino, but also artistic works of great value for the municipality of Havana and for Santo Domingo. In 1929, Angelo Zanelli was included in the prestigious Accademia di San Luca in Rome. In 1938, he received the "Mussolini Prize" as the greatest Italian sculptor, an award given to him in a solemn ceremony at the Campidoglio. A year later he was appointed Academician of Italy. He died in Rome in 1942.
