Carlo Zaoli Biography
Carlo Zauli was born in 1926 in Faenza. After having attended the "G. Ballardini" Institute of Art for Ceramics in Faenza and the technical teaching, in 1950 he inaugurated his ceramic laboratory in Faenza together with his friends Uberto Zannoni and Mario Morelli. In the 1950s, he came into contact with Albert Diato, Nanni Valentini and Giuseppe Spagnulo, with whom he shared artistic interests and attention to high-temperature ceramic materials.
In 1958, Carlo Zauli won the chair of "Practical Technology" at the Institute of Art for Ceramics in Faenza, starting his career as a teacher. This teaching activity has developed in parallel with his artistic research for over twenty years. Furthermore, Carlo Zauli is a full member of the International Association of Art Plastiques.
His talent and mastery in ceramics allow him to create works for the prestigious German company Rosenthal of Selb and to collaborate with the "LaFaenza" tile factory to create innovative projects in this sector. Zauli achieved fame as a ceramist in the 1950s, when he created an important frieze for the palace of Baghdad. He participated in several editions of the Faenza Prize, which he won in 1953, 1958 and 1962, as well as at the Milan Triennale and the Rome Quadrennial, achieving notable commercial success which was sometimes considered limiting for his artistic and creative research, although of notable quality.
After his death, the Carlo Zauli Museum was inaugurated in his hometown and retrospective exhibitions were dedicated to him at the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza in 2002, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo in 2008, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice in 2014 and the Civic Museums of Ancient Art of Bologna in 2015.
