Auction 355 | ISLAMIC & ORIENTAL ART Traditional
Lot 49
Hulu gourd-shaped polychrome porcelain vase with extravagant decoration that imitates a magua, the traditional Chinese jacket, in yellow fabric embroidered with pumpkins and butterflies. Four-character Qianlong apocryphal mark at the bottom. This vase draws inspiration from the elegant 18th century porcelain, made under the reign of Qianlong (1735-1796) and characterized by bizarre shapes combined with bright and lively enamels. The "double pumpkin" shape, a decorative element dear to the Chinese tradition and replicated on an infinite variety of objects, owes its appreciation to the homophony of its name (hulu) with the word luck (fu).
