Auction 390 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA, OCEANICA E DELLE AMERICHE Online
Lot 67
The Piaroa, an ethnic group living semi-isolated in the North East of the Venezuelan Amazon, use headgear like this one during the festivities and dances of the Warime ritual, the most important ceremony of the Piaroa cosmogony.
Rare and fragile, made of branches, fibres and bark and originally embellished at the top with long coloured feathers, this headdress is visual evidence of the artistic sensitivity and a very precious culture that has been perpetuated for millennia by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon now, unfortunately, heading towards extinction.
Measures: 83.0 x 18.0 cm
