200 CHINESE, ASIAN, ISLAMIC AND INDIAN ART
Lot 386
Cf. previous lot for more information on the historical background. Miniature portraying three women sitting on a terrace outside a luxurious palace, the colonnade of which frames the protagonists, each bearing paan leaves in her hands. The composition is framed by a red frame (displaying in the four corners some holes caused by insects eating the organic glue) and on the glass a writing identifying the subject as Gunkali (Gujari) is visible. This painting displays the peculiarities of the Sirohi school, re-interpreting the Rajasthani tradition according to local customs. The similarity with two other paintings: Madhumadhavi Ragini (Art Institute of Chicago Acc. No. 61.122), and Gunakali Ragini (Cleveland Museum Acc. No.1960.283), shows that the three paintings are variations on the theme, prescribed by the Rajasthani tradition, of the woman sharing paan leaves, characterized by a woman suffering for love and the absence of her lover. The Sirohi paintings, on the contrary, depicts the woman pleasantly spending her time with the attendants and, if the first two paintings could represent an isolated case, originated by the disinterest of the artist towards the tradition, this third painting–clearly dealing with the same theme, despite the fact that the name was inexactly reported – sheds some light on the fact that such distance from the tradition was a peculiarity of the artists from Sirohi, who maintained, through the name, only a formal link with the traditional classification (cf. Preda, 2011, p. 380). For further reference see K. Ebeling, Ragamala Painting, 1973.
