Lot 124
black patina wooden sculpture possibly depicting a female figure. These sculptures, associated with various functions in the Mumuye society, are mainly identifiable by the shape of the auricles, which identify the sex based on their size: if large with a large central hole, they can be traced back to female figures. This hyperstilized figure is one of the most typical examples of Mumuye statuary. For a comparative example, see the beautiful iagalagana sculpture kept at the Fondation Beyeler which certainly was a source of inspiration for this piece, or The Met Museum NYC, Acc. no.1983.189. Italian private collection, purchased in France around 1980 from a previous French collection.
