Large white/blue porcelain Swatow dish. China, Ming Dynasty, 17th cent.
In the kraak style; it has at its centre an elaborate scene of ducks flying in a pond; the border with reserves alternates motifs of flowers and ducks. These ceramics were produced in kilns not far from the port of Shantou (Swatow in Dutch documents) in southern China. Coarser porcelains than the kraak production but often with more lively, fresh and spontaneous decorations.
