Auction 365 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA Traditional
Lot 79
Among the Akan and all the subgroups that populated the Gold Coast until 1957, corresponding to today’s Ghana, the gold weights had the function of objects of use, but also of remembering visually ancient proverbs of the oral tradition. The crocodile, for example, was an icon for " The old crocodile swallows a pebble when the year ends" ( misfortunes are inevitable and we must accept them as part of life).
In this lot we propose four weights of gold of various sizes, antiquity and wear, but all contribute to enhance and understand the vastness of African artistic production.
