Lot 18
Throughout Muslim North Africa, the Hand of Fatima, Hamsa or Khamsa is the protective symbol of women par excellence: it protects against the evil eye and negative influences in general. Besides representing with the five fingers of the hand the five fundamental pillars of Islam, it symbolises femininity, wealth, prosperity and freedom for all Muslims, since the story tells of a woman named Fatima who sacrificed her hand in order to be freed. Produced in various shapes and sizes and used throughout the Maghreb as far as Israel, where it is called Miriam's Hand or Hamesh by the Jews.
