Auction 414 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICAS - GIOIELLI DAL MONDO E ARTE AFRICANA Online
Lot 273
Rare and beautiful monkey mask of the Winiama characterized by prominent forehead, square mouth cheek scarifications and round eyes in concentric circles, typical of the sculpture of many of the peoples settled in Burkina Faso.
The several visible flaws and considerable crusty patina resulting from the many offerings received over time give this Wankr mask a particularly old and worn appearance.
A very similar specimen from the Alain Dufur collection is published under tab 82 of the volume Land of the flying masks, Art and culture in Burkina Faso, The ThomasG.B. Wheelock Collection, written by Christopher D. Roy and Thomas G.B. Wheelock for Prestel in 2007
