Auction 355 | ISLAMIC & ORIENTAL ART Traditional
Lot 149
Imposing lacquered and gilded bronze cast figure of Brahma, seated in rajalilasana (royal posture) on a large quadrangular pedestal. According to the traditional iconography the deity is sumptuously dressed and provided with eight arms and four heads. The eight arms symbolize the omnipotence of Brahma, while the four faces allude to the four wisdom books of the Vedas. The cult of Brahma, originally Hindu, spreaded throughout the East and met Buddhism which names this figure as a Dharmapala, or a heavenly protector of the doctrine. Venerated in Thailand with the name of Than Thao Mahaprom or Phra Phrom, it spread locally following the penetration of Indian monks in the Khmer period (c. VIII century).
