Auction 355 | ISLAMIC & ORIENTAL ART Traditional
Lot 150
A large partially gilded alabaster sculpture depicting the reclining Buddha, in a serene and meditative attitude, the right arm supporting the head and the left arm resting on his side. The Reclining Buddha iconography depicts the moment before his earthly death and his passage into Paranirvana. This story has provided a starting point for generations of artists who, over the centuries, have provided an extraordinary variety of compositional models often, as in those of the Gahandaran art, filled with a strong drama. On the other hand, the model developed in South East Asia at the turn of the 17th century focuses on the reassuring and benevolent nature of the mystical experience, the only one capable of giving meaning to the earthly event by sublimating it in its spiritual and eternal dimension. The compositional model of this piece refers to the great Templar sculptures made in Myanmar and Thailand between the end of the 18th/beginning of the 19th century.
