«What the biro represents (represented) for a Westerner, for an Afghan is embroidery, which like a supra-individual memory carries within itself parts of the collective biography.» (J. C. Amman, "Giving Time to Time"). During a trip to Afghanistan in the 1970s, Alighiero Boetti was fascinated by the art of embroidery made strictly by hand by local women. In this situation the Tapestries were born: divided into grids and characterized by the use of letters in bright colours. The words of the tapestries, apparently discordant, suggested themes of a political, social and cultural nature; so that the spectator no longer suffered the art in a passive way.
