"Eliot's and de Chirico's hollow men sought to allusively and ironically describe modern man, but none positioned themselves like Rosai in front of this man, not to judge but to be judged. It is clear that Rosai puts man on trial, but then sits beside him at the same bench, too Christianly convinced of 'not having to judge.' In this sense, I do not know, and perhaps there is none, a painting less proud than his, indeed, in many self-portraits, it is demonstrated with what merciless eye Rosai looked at himself."
