Auction 365 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA Traditional
Lot 104
This small ritual object in bone, used during the initiatory ceremonies and as visual vocabularies to remember ancient sayings and proverbs, represents a miniature bill engraved with the concentric circles typical of the sculpture of the League.
Large iron bill hooks were used to clean the undergrowth of the forest. The small ivory or bone hooks symbolize diligence and cooperation between several people: "He who does not have many people (friends) cannot clean the tangle of lianas" (Biebuyck, 1973).
