Lukungu ivory mask, elegant and accurate in details and sanding.
Lukungu masks were rare and represented the final category of all initiation objects. It was never exhibited or worn ( this specimen has no holes) except during the initiation rites. It is interesting to know that on reaching the last degree of Kindi initiation, the initiate was presented with a whole series of objects, but no explanation was given since "having accomplished all the degrees, he had reached information and knowledge" (Biebuyck 1986, 151) and no definitions or interpretations were required.
Beautiful patina and beautiful back, completely black and untouched.
