Lot 170
Non coeval marble base. Overall dimensions: 63x23.4x19 cm. Crack on the right arm and lack of part of the shield.
Provenance: Private collection, Parma.
The model derives from the marble sculptures of Peace and War by Girolamo Campagna placed above the "Porta al Senato" in the Sala delle Quattro Porte of the Doge's Palace in Venice (1585-1586). Usually presented in pairs, these figures were massively replicated in bronze in Venetian foundries between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, made, in some cases, as fireplace andirons. For comparison, see the one in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest (inv. 5303) and the figure of Minerva as part of a pair of andirons at the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. 14.40.693).
Starting price: € 2.000,00
Estimate: € 4.000,00 - 6.000,00
