Auction 390 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA, OCEANICA E DELLE AMERICHE Online
Lot 62
Traditional hook or hanger used by the mountain peoples of Luzon Island to keep food and personal effects suspended and elevated from the ground to remove them from the reach of the various animals that inhabit those territories.
Synthetically carved in the shape of a varanus (the discriminating feature with the crocodile figure is the stubby tail), this representative utilitarian object, which rightfully falls into the category of a work of art, has been embellished and characterised with abstract geometric engravings typical of the cultures of the Luzon peoples.
Small visible flaws blend in with the signs of use and a beautiful patina.
