Milanese sculptor, pupil first of Camillo Pacetti and then of Pompeo Marchesi, Giuseppe Croff worked in the Fabbrica del Duomo from 1837 to 1865 and exhibited at the Promotrice di Belle Arti in Turin in 1843, in Milan in 1848 and in Florence in 1861. Turin of 1843 one of his "Magdalene" is mentioned, defined as a "marble statuette" (n ° 72) (V. Angius, "Second Exhibition of Fine Arts in Turin" in "Il Liceo: journal of Science and Literature, of Arti, di Teatri e di Mode ", 1843, p. 178), which, also for this attention to detail of the small size, it can be assumed that it is a model similar to the one presented here, which, in the setting of the figure , seems to be inspired by the famous sculpture of "Trust in God" by Lorenzo Bartolini, from 1833.
